MusicBrainz has an established and clear set of licensing terms for its database content and the contents of its wiki. Of course, the linked data translation of the MusicBrainz database contents will be offered under the same Public Domain license applied to the MusicBrainz database contents. However, some content in the MusicBrainz database is licensed as by-nc-sa including annotations and folksonomy tags. JISC considers this license incompatible with completely open data. Therefore, this small subset of the MusicBrainz database will likely be omitted from our translation moving forward.

Furthermore, the MusicBrainz wiki contents are also licensed as by-nc-sa. Given that content related to the LinkedBrainz project will often be collaboratively created using the MusicBrainz wiki, then adapted for posts and documentation on this site, we choose to adopt the same license. However, in the interest of greater openess, JISC favors the application of a by-sa license for project blogs and documentation. For now, to allow for content to be transfered between the MusicBrainz wiki and this website without the hindrance of incompatible licensing, we are still applying a by-nc-sa license to this site. If this is deemed unacceptable by JISC, we may change this license, delete some contents derived from the MusicBrainz wiki from this site, and be much more reserved and cautious about future use of the MusicBrainz wiki for the LinkedBrainz project.
